OOBLECK........YESSSSS!!!!!

Today in class, we made oobleck!  After studying states of matter and reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck, we made this wonderful stuff!  The kids were amazed that a substance could act as a solid and a liquid at the same time.  It is a non-Newtonian fluid.  Here is the recipe that we used:

1        cup corn starch
1/2     cup water

Mix it together until it has the consistency of pancake mix.  Then try your own experiments to investigate the properties of the oobleck!  We tried picking it up and squeezing it apply pressure, then releasing to see it act as a liquid.  We rolled golf balls across it and then tried dropping the golf ball into it from varying heights.

  1. Thanks for sharing! I did this for the first time with my 1st graders today. They LOVED it. They were soooo excited and they did a great job. I had a student interview her class members individually with a flip camera afterwards- they had some really great responses to the lesson.

  2. Sweet! Glad it worked out *Ash*! Your room will never be the same. Like sand after coming home from the beach, you'll be finding corn starch for weeks! ha ha. Have a great weekend!

  3. Thanks for the tip, Mr. Hayes! I am planning on doing this activity with my 5th graders this week and wasn't sure what the best ratio was.
